When volatile chemicals in contaminated soil or groundwater migrate into the indoor air of buildings, vapor intrusion occurs. Health risks such as respiratory problems and headaches can occur and long-term exposure can increase the risk of developing cancer.
This increased danger to human health lead to the 2008 introduction of ASTM’s new vapor intrusion standard (E2600-22), “Standard Practice for the Assessment of Vapor Intrusion into Structures on Property involved in Real Estate Transactions.”
